It's Not You, It's Your Hormones

82. Lose belly fat, fix sleep & build muscle after menopause: Tammy’s story

Episode Summary

She came in at 65, exhausted, sleeping through the night maybe half the week, and thick around the middle after a decade of trying everything. 17 pounds later she's back under her college weight and sleeping through the night, and this is the case study of how we did it.

Episode Notes

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear about hormones is that they stop mattering after menopause. That whatever happened to your body, happened, and now you just live with it. The belly is the belly. The sleep is the sleep. Welcome to being 60.

I have a very specific person I want you to hear from on that.

My mom. Tammy. She was my actual first client, back when I was managing ecommerce at Crocs from 8am to 6pm and doing my practitioner course at night with no real idea what I was doing. She raised her hand to be my beta client because I wanted to know if this thing that worked for me could work for a woman past menopause. She is also the reason I have the nerve to do any of this.

She came in exhausted from a work situation that was quietly wrecking her, sleeping through the night about half the nights a week, and carrying weight around the midsection she had gained over a decade and could not shift. She had tried the running, the rowing, the lifting, Body for Life, the grapefruit diet. Her doubt going in was not "will this work," it was "I do not have time for this."

What happened next is the part I want you to sit with, because it is not a diet story. It is a woman at 66 who ended up under her college weight, in a sleeveless black dress she had not worn in 30 years, with a raincoat that now overlaps four inches, who reads 400 pages on longevity on her sabbatical and comes back telling me why women in their 40s, 50s and 60s need to be lifting right now.
